GOPENG, PERAK — While most 20-somethings are busy climbing the corporate ladder, a small group in Perak is busy doing the exact opposite: lying down.
Gopeng Santuary, Malaysia’s first “Youth Retirement Home” has officially opened its doors in Gopeng, offering a radical solution to the epidemic of burnout. Designed specifically for young adults exhausted by the “9-to-5” grind, the facility provides a month-long sanctuary where the only requirement is to exist.
The RM2,000 Escape from Capitalism
For a flat fee of RM2,000 (roughly $430 USD), residents move into an eight-acre nature compound. The price is all-inclusive, covering:
- Accommodations: Private, quiet living spaces away from city noise.
- Full Board: Three home-cooked meals a day.
- Total Autonomy: No schedules, no forced social interaction, and—most importantly—no KPIs.
The facility functions as a physical manifestation of the “tang ping” (lying flat) movement. In a culture that often equates self-worth with economic output, the Gopeng retreat allows young adults to rebel by simply daydreaming or watching the local ducks graze.
Inspired by Elder Care
The anonymous founder’s inspiration came from his family’s background operating a traditional nursing home in Ipoh. He observed the peace and care provided to seniors and realized that the “sandwich generation”—caught between career pressure and economic anxiety—needed that same level of intervention before reaching old age.
The philosophy is simple: Why wait until you’re 70 to find peace if you are already exhausted at 25?
A Polarizing Hit
The home’s debut has sparked a viral debate across Southeast Asia. On one side, skeptics view the “youth retirement” trend as a sign of a “lost generation” and a “dystopian” retreat from reality. On the other side, the demand is undeniable.
Officially listed on Facebook as a “retirement and assisted living facility,” the home has already sold out its first month. For the residents currently checking in, the “dystopia” isn’t the quiet farm in Gopeng—it’s the office they left behind.
